How does an ip address work?

Every single device that has access to the internet and it's connected online has an assigned unique number known as an Internet Protocol (IP) address. An IP addresses has four different numbers separated by periods (also known as 'dotted-quad') and looks like 127.0.0.1.

Just because those numbers are most of the times assigned to internet service providers with region-based blocks, an IP address can be used to identify the region or country from which a computer is connecting to the Internet. An IP address can sometimes be used to show the user's general location.
